Buying a used car? Don’t get caught out
Buying a second-hand vehicle can be a smart way to save money, but only if you know what to look for.
NT Consumer Affairs has released a new fold-out pocket guide to help Territorians make informed decisions when buying a used car and avoid costly surprises down the track. The guide highlights 9 key vehicle components that should be checked before you buy:
- engine
- transmission
- clutch
- battery
- alternator
- radiator
- brakes
- exhaust
- ignition system.
Developed in collaboration with Consumer Protection Western Australia, the guide is designed to help buyers spot warning signs early, ask the right questions and feel more confident when inspecting a vehicle.
Small guide, big help
The fold-out guide is small, practical and easy to follow, making it ideal to take with you when inspecting vehicles at a dealership, private sale or auction. A quick check at the right time can save you from expensive repairs later.
While the guide is a useful first step, NT Consumer Affairs continues to recommend that buyers arrange an independent mechanical inspection once they have narrowed down their preferred vehicle.
To make this information more accessible, NT Consumer Affairs has also developed 3 short videos in Aboriginal languages, explaining the key points from the guide. These languages include:
- Tiwi – spoken by the Tiwi people of the Tiwi Islands, north of Darwin
- Western Arrernte – spoken across Central Australia, including Alice Springs and surrounding communities
- Yolŋu Matha – a group of related languages spoken in north-east Arnhem Land, including communities such as Nhulunbuy, Yirrkala and surrounding homelands.
These videos support stronger consumer understanding by providing clear, practical information in languages spoken by many Territorians, particularly in remote and regional areas.
