TAX SCAM WARNING

Northern Territory Consumer Affairs has been alerted by the Real Estate Institute of the Northern Territory (REINT) to a scam letter that was received by a property manager that offers landlords living overseas the opportunity to claim tax exemption on rental income.

It appears that these scammers are targeting property managers in an effort to gain information on their property portfolios that they manage on behalf of non-Australian residents.  The scam letter has an application form attached that requires the applicant to supply detailed personal information.  Scammers may then use the information provided to assume the identities of the non-residents or to commit fraud.

If you have, or think that you have, fallen victim to this scam or a similar type of Australian Tax Office scam, call 1800 179 647 or email the details to ReportEmailFraud@ato.gov.au.
