Tips to keep your family safe these summer holidays
The weather is heating up which means we’re outside more often with our families. Make sure the products your family uses help you have a safe summer. Everyday summer products can be unsafe if they are incorrectly used or if children are not supervised.
Avoid safety risks when using these products by following our important safety tips to keep you and your family safe this summer.
For more information about the tips, go to the Product Safety Australia website.
Portable pools
Portable pools are a cheap, popular choice for families to keep cool, but children can drown in them, even if there’s not much water in the pool. Always supervise kids when playing in the water, and pack away portable pools when you’re not using them.
When looking for a portable pool to buy, make sure it complies with the mandatory standard on the Product Safety Australia website.
Christmas toys
When shopping for toys this Christmas, check that gifts for little ones are age appropriate and don’t pose choking hazards.
Button batteries can be deadly if swallowed. If toys for your kids contain button batteries, make sure the battery compartment is secure and can’t be opened by children.
If swallowed or inserted, button batteries can cause severe injury within 2 hours. This can be fatal. If you suspect a child has swallowed a button battery, immediately call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.
Trampolines
It only takes one bad bounce to cause a trampoline injury. Maintain your trampoline and always watch young children when using them.
Follow the 5-step safety checklist to keep kids safe on trampolines:
- one at a time
- supervise
- safety padding
- check condition
- hazard free surrounds
Aquatic toys
Pool toys and flotation aids are for fun, not safety. Always stay close and supervise kids when playing in water.
Check age and weight restrictions when buying aquatic toys to make sure the products are appropriate.
BBQ safety
While barbecue brushes help keep your grill clean, damaged or worn brushes can turn a great meal into a real hazard. Loose or broken bristles can end up in your food, posing serious health risks.
Check the grill for loose bristles before cooking or use a bristle-free cleaner.
Check on how to make sure your BBQ hasn’t been recalled on the Product Safety Australia website.
