What you need to know to get the bullies off your back

Bullying, at any level, is not acceptable, and there is something you can do about it.

Protect your mobile telephone number

  • Only give your phone number to your friends;
  • Don’t leave your phone where someone else can see the number;
  • Consider using caller ID blocking to hide your phone number when you call someone.

Don’t respond to unwanted calls and/or SMS

Bullies get a kick out of upsetting their victim, so if you don’t let them know they’ve upset you, you’ve taken way half their ’fun’.

If you get an insulting message, don’t respond, Keep the message, together with the time and date it was sent, as evidence, and tell your parents, teacher or another adult.

The law is on your side

It is a criminal offence to use a mobile phone to menace, harass or offend another person.

If you know the person sending the message, your service provider may be able to stop certain numbers from calling you, or if you feel it necessary, provide you with a new phone number.
